1977
1977 - The Colorado Blue Spruce that served the past four years could not stand the Washingotn environment and died at the age of 44. It was replaced in October 1977 by a 32-foot Colorado Blue Spruce donated by a family in Rockville, MD. The tree was selected from 90 candidates offered from across the nation after a 9-month, 7,000-mile search.
The predominantly green color scheme in 1977 was symbolic of hte Pageant Theme, "The American Family."
About 2,000 low-wattage green lamps dominated the tree, with 500 clear twinkle lamps lighting the snowflake ornaments which were about 15-inches in diameter.
New concepts in lighting and design had made a 74 percent reduction in electrical consumption over the previous 5 years.
