2010

From the program for the 2010 National Christmas Tree Lighting -- Thursday, December 9, 2010:

For the second year in a row, LED technology provided all the illumination for the National Christmas Tree. And this year, the average homeowner could purchase all of these same products to light and decorate their homes.
2010's tree featured a background of green and white LED strings of lights. The ornaments were crystalline-stile LED blue, red, green and white spheres, internally illuminated with LEDs. White LED snowflake ornaments provided additional visual interest and coordinated with new LED snowflake toppers on the individual state and territory trees that surround the National Christmas Tree.

"This is the first year that custom ornaments are not being used on the National Christmas Tree. Today's LED ornaments are not only energy efficient and long lasting, they're also very beautiful - even uring the day when they are not lit. They can enhance any holiday lighting design," said Mary Beth Gotti, Manager of the GE Lighting Institute in Cleveland, Ohio.
The lighting design features 750 strings of white and green LED lights, 430 6-inch LED red, blue, green and white spheres, and 84 white LED snowflakes. Each ornament only consumes about 2 watts. The topper for the tree is the same heirloom topper used for the last four years. The 42-inch star is illuminated with industrial grade GE Tetra® LEDs. Total power consumption for the entire tree is about 7000 watts. "In past years, when the tree was lit entirely with incandescent lamps, the total wattage for th tree exceeded 50,000 watts. LEDs clearly provide a very beautiful, energy efficient solution," said Mary Beth.

GE has been designing the lighting for the National Christmas Tree since 1962, producing and donating the lighting and decorations.
