President Eisenhower asked Americans... to make the Christmas season a time of dedication to remove imperfections in the nation. He deplored denial of equal political and economic opportunity because of racial prejudice.
In a speech at the lighting of the national Christmas tree, the President said that despite the material comforts which bless this country, "We see blots and blemishes that mar the picture of a nation of people who devoutly believe that they were created in the image of their Maker."
