The ornaments cycled to produce two distinct color schemes. In one mode, the gold bulbs outlining the diamond-shaped ornaments created a counterpoint to the red pattern, establishing a gold and red combination. A diming mechanism slowly faded one pattern into the other and created a continuously changing lighting effect.
The top ornament was about 5 feet tall and combined elements of both ornament shapes. It also changed from all red in one mode to red and bright gold in the other.
